The Alberni Valley, located in the heart of Vancouver Island, offers excellent soaring from May to September. Opportunities exist for thermal flying in the valley, ridge flying on the neighbouring Beaufort Range, and occasional flights in mountain wave.

The AVSA operates a single PW-5 Smyk world-class sailplane. Tows, flight instruction, and introductory flights are provided by the Vancouver Island Soaring Centre using a Piper Pawnee towplane and a PW-6U two-seat glider.
